Windesheim replaced its existing results registration with a future-proof system that supports flexible, personalised learning routes. Windesheim wants every student to choose their own route. The existing system was not built for that. Windesheim is working on a new educational framework in which students shape their own route on the basis of learning outcomes: instead of fixed courses, the student has more say in what to study and how.
FlexOn: the route to a degree
With the introduction of the Dutch Learning Outcomes in Higher Education Act (Wet leeruitkomsten hoger onderwijs), an ambitious step is being taken towards more personalised learning routes and a more flexible range of education for students. This new approach lets students compose their studies to fit, so they can develop their talents and pursue their ambitions. Next to the existing modules for the curriculum, exam administration, timetabling and enrolment, a new system was needed to support results, progress and graduation in a flexible way. Windesheim therefore developed FlexOn, in close collaboration with Enigmatry. The system offers an efficient, clear administration of exam results and carefully guards the personal standards each student has met. The result is a smoother, more flexible and more transparent route to a degree.
Windesheim’s ambition is that every student has a personal learning route they can shape themselves. No student should drop out unnecessarily, and that is why we are building an information chain that makes this technically possible.
Core functions of FlexOn
Registration of results and exam attempts: grades for tests, exams and unit assessments, with a full administration of exam opportunities and attempts per academic year.
Automatic assessment against standards: from the grades entered, the system determines whether an exam, unit, learning outcome or standard has been met, including cum laude standards.
Personal standards: standards are decoupled from results. Students can reuse learning outcomes from earlier programmes, switch programmes more easily or earn additional degrees.
Study progress: FlexOn supports teachers and examiners with clear progress information during assessment, for exams and for graduation.
Transcripts and certificates: grade lists, diploma supplements, transcripts for exchange students and GPA certificates are fully supported.
